Our Charities

Each year we choose a number of local charities and community groups to support. In 2024 we supported the work of:

We were also able to make donations to Detour House to help support their operations with under-28 year old girls who are experiencing domestic challenges and Fresh Start Missions, who bring their washing truck to Wentworth park to give homeless a place to shower and wash their clothes.

Barnardos

The funds raised by Christmas in Pyrmont will go to Barnardos Australia safety and prevention programs, specifically to support youth homelessness. With a growing number of young people at risk of becoming homeless due to family violence and abuse, Barnardos is working towards a future where every young person is safe and secure. Addressing youth homelessness isn’t just about housing. We ensure that young people are equipped with the necessary tools to reach their full potential including support for young people who are disengaging with school or facing conflict at home.

Pyrmont Cares

This year’s Christmas In Pyrmont donation has been put to good use as follows:

  • $12,166 on the portion of the purchase price of the new truck that was not funded from other sources;
  • $5,078 on Insurance to cover our volunteers against personal injury and to protect Pyrmont Cares from public liability claims, both in the Depot and when using the motor vehicles;
  • $3,600 per annum on the unbudgeted rental increase recently imposed on Pyrmont Cares by the owner of our Leichhardt storage depot; and
  • $4,156 added to Reserves to help cushion Pyrmont Cares against expected imminent cost increases, particularly in permitting us to channel our volunteers’ valuable time towards delivering our services to the needy rather than towards time-consuming fundraising activities.

Ultimo Public School

Ultimo Public School have a number of great initiatives related to reading that Christmas In Pyrmont are very happy to contribute towards. These include:

  • A Breakfast Reading Club program for 100 students selected by their class teacher as most likely to benefit from extra support provided by a tailored reading program, where funds have been used support suitable books, a nutritious breakfast, and paid support staff.
  • New forward facing library shelving that willallow students to easily see the full collection. Shelving that is flexible, accessible and appealing allows students to see the quality literature and sort through the collection easily.  This gives students more ownership and accessibility to find the books they actually want, which means more borrowing.
  • Seating Booths for Collaborative Work (two sets). Well-designed flexible student learning spaces to support a wide range of learning experiences and empower learners to progress at their own pace. These spaces can fit up to 4 students and enable personalised teaching approaches designed for individual needs and interests.
  • Reading chairs. Soft, flexible student seating allows students to sit quietly and comfortably during reading sessions and library lunchtimes. They are also suitable for students that might require additional support to engage in learning.

Uniting Harris Community Centre

The Christmas in Pyrmont donation will ensure the following programs continue to be offered to support those most vulnerable in our community as well as anyone affected by the cost of living.

  • Financial support in the form of CHEX Community gift cards, material aid and food emergency hampers. Click here for more info about CHEX https://www.chexcommunity.org.au/
  • Access to low cost food and toiletries at The Pantry (Ultimo Pyrmont’s local low cost shop). Click here for more info https://www.thepantry.org.au/
